SUMMARY
This novel begins by sharing background information on the main characters. Alice, Molly, and Reena are teen girls who attend a boarding school together in Massachusetts. That is not all they have in common though. The girls find that they all have what they consider to be "evil" stepmothers.
Reena invites Alice and Molly to roof of their dorm for a secret meeting where they form a club called "The Poison Apples." In a twist on the Snow White story, the girls have decided to poison their stepmothers' by making their lives miserable.
On a school trip to Mount McKinsey, the girls come up with their evil plot. Alice's stepmother has an acting career, so Alice will put itching powder in her costume. Molly's stepmother has a relationship with Molly's sister, Spencer, so Molly sets out to destroy the relationship. Reena's stepmother has a pet penguin, so Renna plans to kidnap the penguin.
The girls never actually carry out their plans. Alice and Molly realize that their stepmothers are not as mean as they thought. Reena finds that she is a poor penguin-napper As the story ends, the girls come to realize that their stepmothers are human even if they may not seem like it.

REVIEW
I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked the character development of Alice, Molly, and Reena. They started out miserable, but grew to find a sort of family with each other. They also softened up to their stepmothers, which is nice.
I liked that the story was told from the viewpoints of all three girls. There were quite a few funny twists in this book too. I especially liked the penguin-napping story!
I did not care for the abrupt ending. I did not get all of my questions answered. What happens next? Will The Poison Apples plot more revenge against their stepmothers? Will the club continue on?
4 STARS (almost a 3)
