The Daughters

THE DAUGHTERS

By:  Joanna Philbin

FIRST SENTENCE

“Lizzie Summers stood where she usually did when she was out with her mother – off to the side, hidden in the crowd, safely out of frame – and watched the world’s most famous supermodel drive the paparazzi crazy. ”

SUMMARY
from goodreads

The only daughter of supermodel Katia Summers, witty and thoughtful Lizzie Summers likes to stick to the sidelines.

The sole heir to Metronome Media and the daughter of billionaire Karl Jurgensen, outspoken Carina Jurgensen would rather climb mountains than social ladders.

Daughter of chart-topping pop icon Holla Jones, stylish and sensitive Hudson Jones is on the brink of her own music breakthrough.

By the time freshman year begins, unconventional-looking Lizzie Summers has come to expect fawning photographers and adoring fans to surround her gorgeous supermodel mother. But when Lizzie is approached by a fashion photographer who believes she’s “the new face of beauty,” Lizzie surprises herself and her family by becoming the newest Summers woman to capture the media spotlight.

In this debut young adult series tailored for younger teens, author Joanna Philbin explores what it’s really like to grow up in the thick of the celebrity world. As Lizzie and her two best friends (and fellow daughters-of-celebrities) juggle normal high school events with glamorous family functions, they discover the pitfalls of fame and the importance of friendship.

REVIEW

The Daughters series takes a fresh look at the daughters of celebrities.  What is really great is that these daughters are not snobby.  They shy away from being in their parents’ spotlights.  These girls are normal teens who want to be recognized for their own achievements, rather than for being the daughters of someone famous.  Makes perfect sense to me.

There are three books to this series and each one focuses on one of three daughters.  Lizzie Summers, the daughter of a famous supermodel, is the focus of this first book. She is a quirky-looking redhead who looks nothing like her famous mother.  I loved reading how Lizzie ends up turning on her own spotlight in her own special way.  She learned the important lessons of being yourself and following your heart.

Did you know that Joanna Philbin is a celebrity’s daughter too?  Regis Philbin, from Regis and Kelly, is her father.  Since she has walked the walked, she gives this whole series a realistic spin.  She’s an awesome writer and it looks as though she has found HER own spotlight too.  How cool is that?

Look for my review of the second book in this series tomorrow.  Thank you to Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for sending this book for me to review.
