Three sisters share a magical, unshakable bond in this witty high-concept novel from the critically acclaimed author of Audrey, Wait! Around the time of their parents’ divorce, sisters April, May, and June recover special powers from childhood – powers that come in handy navigating the hell that is high school. Powers that help them cope with the hardest year of their lives. But could they have a greater purpose?
April, the oldest and a bit of a worrier, can see the future. Middle-child May can literally disappear. And baby June reads minds – everyone’s but her own. When April gets a vision of disaster, the girls come together to save the day and reconcile their strained family. They realize that no matter what happens, powers or no powers, they’ll always have each other.
Because there’s one thing stronger than magic: sisterhood.
REVIEW
Sisters share a special bond. In this case, that bond is especially deep. April, May, and June share the gift of magic.
I absolutely loved that the girls’ powers fit in perfectly with their birth order. April, the oldest, endlessly worries about her younger sisters. Having the power to see the future helps April focus that worry. May, the middle child, is a loner and barely gets noticed. It totally makes sense that she should have the power to disappear. And June, the youngest, longs to keep up with her big sisters by being popular. The power of reading minds makes that so much easier for her.
My favorite thing about this book is that it showcases magical powers in everyday teen lives. There are no paranormal creatures and no fantasy world. Just realistic teen sisters who happen to have magical powers. Loved it!
Robin Benway has a great teen voice and she mixes in plenty of humor. I especially liked May’s sarcasm and the hilarious bickering between the sisters. It reminded me a bit of my little brother and I when we disagree.
Magical powers and the bond of sisterhood combine to make The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May, and June an enjoyable read.
