GUEST POST
A DIZZYING CONVERSATION
BY ANNE OSTERLUND
(Author of Academy 7, Aurelia, and Exile)
Featuring Aurelia (former crown princess of Tyralt)
Y’all, this has got to be the cutest and most creative guest post ever. Take a few minutes to enjoy the fun that is Aurelia! You also get a sneak peek into Anne's fabulously dramatic writing. Thanks, Melina
“It’s almost here!” Aurelia bounds into the room spinning.
I pause, my spoon midway to its bowl of Cocoa Puffs. “What is?”
This is just me, pushing her buttons because I know perfectly well what she’s excited about.
She stops spinning, looking appalled. “The release date for Exile.” (Exile, which goes on sale April 28th, is the sequel to her first book).
“Is it?” I laugh.
And she returns to her spinning. Apparently this is one of those things that cannot be spoiled by an obtuse author.
“I’ve been waiting forever!” she declares.
“I know,” I say, setting aside the bowl of Cocoa Puffs. “I’ve been waiting just as long.”
“Yes, but you didn’t have to trek through a forest or climb the Gate, or cross a desert.” Her spins become a little less steady, and I hope she doesn’t crash into a potted plant.
“I certainly did,” I argue. “How do you think we made it to the far reaches of your kingdom?”
She stops spinning and shrugs. “Robert.”
Which I suppose is fair. He was the expedition guide, and I did make him do most of the planning.
“Really,” I say, “I think we’ve all earned a reading vacation.”
She collapses onto a purple bean bag. “Where?” Her eyebrows rise in a challenge.
Which I’m totally prepared for. “To Melina’s.”
I can see Aurelia’s brain scrawling through the various vacation spots in Tyralt. (The ability to see inside your character’s mind is a major advantage to the author).
“What is Melina’s?” she finally asks.
“It’s a blog,” I explain. “At readingvacation.blogspot. It features palm trees!”
She appears nonplussed. (I realize this is because she has never seen a palm tree.) Her foot begins tapping.
“And fold-out chairs,” I point out.
Still tapping.
“And . . . wide open blue sky.”
The tapping pauses.
“And brilliant white sandy beaches.”
She glances my way, then toward the door as though searching for something. Or someone.
“And best of all . . .” I drag this out, knowing she won’t be able to stand it.
“What?” she demands.
“Your book.”
“Robert!” she shouts. “We’re going to A Reading Vacation!
Author’s Note: Thank you so much for having us, Melina. I hope you and your readers will all visit Aurelia, Robert, and I on our website: www.anneosterlund.com and our blog: www.anneosterlund.blogspot.com. And, of course, we hope you enjoy the rather hazardous, and more harrowing, expedition in Exile!
