GOODREADS SUMMARY

After winter break, the girls at the very prestigious Longbourn Academy become obsessed with the prom. Lizzie Bennet, who attends Longbourn on a scholarship, isn’t interested in designer dresses and expensive shoes, but her best friend, Jane, might be — especially now that Charles Bingley is back from a semester in London.

Lizzie is happy about her friend’s burgeoning romance but less than impressed by Charles’s friend, Will Darcy, who’s snobby and pretentious. Darcy doesn’t seem to like Lizzie either, but she assumes it’s because her family doesn’t have money. Clearly, Will Darcy is a pompous jerk — so why does Lizzie find herself drawn to him anyway?

Will Lizzie’s pride and Will’s prejudice keep them apart? Or are they a prom couple in the making? Whatever the result, Elizabeth Eulberg, author of The Lonely Hearts Club, has concocted a very funny, completely stylish delight for any season — prom or otherwise.

REVIEW

I am in love with this modern day retelling of the classic Pride and Prejudice. If you are a fan of Elizabeth and Darcy, like so many of us are, then you will go wild for this new take on the original. I read the children’s version of the classic, and this new version follows the basic story nicely with some modern twists.

Prom is a HUGE deal to Jane and the other girls at Longbourn Academy. Everyone, that is, except Lizzie. If it weren’t for her scholarship, Lizzie would never be able to afford such an expensive school. While her friends are obsessing over hairstyles and dresses, Lizzie is concentrating on her piano lessons. I can relate to Lizzie because I care WAY more about reading and school than the social scene and fancy clothes. I like when I can see a bit of myself in a character.

The boys from Pemberley Academy have prom-on-the-brain too. They are attracted to the wealthy girls at Longbourn, not the scholarship students. The one exception would be Will Darcy, who comes off as a snobby jerk who isn’t into the prom scene at all. Oh, but my opinion of Darcy changed as the story went on.  It was like Lizzie's feelings were becoming my own.

Romance is the heart of this story. There are crushes, couples, and prom dates galore, but the relationship between Lizzie and Darcy takes center stage. This unlikely pair goes from nothing to something in a unique way. Even if you have read the original, there are still some romantic surprises in store.

This retelling of Jane Austen’s classic tale has me thinking about a prom in my own future. I wonder if I’ll have a Darcy of my own as a date. I hope you’ll read this sweet and romantic story.

COVER COMMENTS

This pretty blue prom dress with sparkles is just beautiful. I love how Lizzie has scissors to show how much she really doesn’t care about all the fluff and glamour of prom. The pretty pink background adds a little girlie to the blue dress.
