GOODREADS SUMMARY

Welcome to Anara, a world mysteriously crumbling to devastation, where nothing is what it seems: Ancient relics emit technologically advanced powers, members of the old Order are hunted by the governing Watch yet revered by the people, and the great energy that connects all seems to also be destroying all. The only hope for the world lies in Galen, a man of the old Order and a Keeper of relics, and his sixteen-year-old apprentice, Raffi. They know of a secret relic with great power that has been hidden for centuries. As they search for it, they will be tested beyond their limits. For there are monsters- some human, some not-that also want the relic's power and will stop at nothing to get it.

REVIEW

The Dark City is the first in a four book series by esteemed author Catherine Fisher. She is known for her way of writing fantastic, complex, fantasy worlds. The Dark City is no exception. I was drawn in by the idea of a world of powerful, forbidden relics, and held captive by the exciting journey to find a missing relic.

The world of Anara is a place bordering on ruin, where magic is looked down on and relics are destroyed. The creatures that inhabit Anara are unique and they add an air of danger to the land. I love the complexity of the history of Anara. There are several legends surrounding the relics, and these legends play well into the plot.

Carys is my favorite character. She is a girl that Raffi and Galen meet on their journey who secretly works for the Watch. I love how she begins to trust and admire magic, which leads to her questioning her upbringing. I enjoyed reading Carys’ diary entries and getting into her mind.

While this series was first published some years ago, it has just been released again. I can’t wait to get my eyes on the next three books!

COVER COMMENTS

I love the vibrant blues and that little splash of green. Oh, the mask is great too and it looks metallic like the title. Great cover!
