GOODREADS SUMMARY

Beatrice "Tris" Prior has reached the fateful age of sixteen, the stage at which teenagers in Veronica Roth's dystopian Chicago must select which of five factions to join for life. Each faction represents a virtue: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. To the surprise of herself and her selfless Abnegation family, she chooses Dauntless, the path of courage. Her choice exposes her to the demanding, violent initiation rites of this group, but it also threatens to expose a personal secret that could place in mortal danger. Veronica Roth's young adult Divergent trilogy launches with a captivating adventure about love and loyalty playing out under most extreme circumstances.

REVIEW

Beatrice felt that she never really fit in with her selfless Abnegation family. She always longed for something more exciting; the risks and thrills of the Dauntless. When she had the opportunity, Beatrice left her family, renamed herself Tris, and joined the Dauntless.

Learning more about the Dauntless was a special treat to me. Their ideals were scattered between bravery and mindless risk taking. The Dauntless had tattoos and piercings, and they dressed in black. They even jumped off buildings and moving trains to get around. Scary stuff!

Despite some of the crazy Dauntless antics, Tris began to realize what true bravery was all about. She learned that you could be both selfless and brave at the same time. She also came to understand the importance of teamwork. Tris was unstoppable!

The plot is killer! The Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite factions are on the verge of an all-out war. Tris and her trainer, Four, set out to stop the war. Oh, and you won’t ever guess why his name is Four. Veronica Roth works in details and secret revelations like a conductor of a symphony. Never overwhelming, but perfectly paced, this debut is truly a must read.

COVER COMMENTS

I like the Chicago skyline is at the bottom. Check out that awesome symbol on fire – looks Dauntless to me. I love that the sky is all cloudy like a storm is brewing.
