Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand and the biggest city in Thailand. Thai people call it Krung Thep which means the city of angels. Actually it is not the full name, but because the full name is very long (Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit), nobody of course uses the full name, although many Thais remember it all.
Bangkok is one of the most important cities in Asia for business and commerce. Because of the location the city is also a gateway for many visitors who travel to South East Asia.
Bangkok used to be called also the Venice of Asia because of many canals in the city. Nowadays there are less canals than it used to be, but there are still quite a few, and a lot of people use canals every day for transportation, especially Saen Seb canal which you can travel by boat from Bang Kapi to Baglamphu and vice versa.
Bangkok is a very cosmopolitan city. There are people from all over the world living in the city. Many of them stay here because of business, but there are also many people who fell in love with Bangkok and decided to live and work here.
It is also very exotic city and it is a regional hub for finance and business, but it is also very important city because of its culture, fashion and entertainment. The city has many attractions and it is famous for its temples, and also for of its nightlife.
The most famous temples of Bangkok and its landmarks are the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Those are must see places for tourists.
The most popular and famous places for nightlife for tourists and expats in Bangkok are Patpong, Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy and RCA. Every year about 10 million foreigners visit Bangkok, which makes it the second most visited city in the world, after London.
Bangkok is divided into the eastern and western parts by the Chao Phraya River which is also the main geographical feature of the city. The river is also used for transportation and every day thousands of people travel to work by boats on the Chao Phraya River. The city occasionally gets flooded by the waters of the Chao Phraya river, and sometimes also by the heavy rains. The city is only 2 meters above the sea level, so flooding is a danger, but big floods like in 2011 (the inner city wasn't flooded) don't happen often.
The main commercial centers of the city where the most businesses and offices are located are Silom - Sathorn roads area and the Sukhumvit area. In those places there are also many hotels and you can always see many foreigners who live in Bangkok in those areas.
Khao San Road in Baglamphoo is the area where a lot of tourists, mostly backpackers stay. It is a very colorful place where you can meet people from almost every country in the world.
