Named after the patron saint of England and considered by many the most characteristic movie theater in Lisbon, the São Jorge (or Saint George in English) building is most certainly worthy of a visit. Well, if your trip is long enough, why not even go there and see a movie ;)Originally opened in 1950 the place was renewed in 1982 and in 2001, yet, it still holds all the atmosphere from its glorious past. Just look above at the main lobby and tell me if its wooden interiors combined with the old projector besides the couches don't just send the room back into the 50's?
Actually with three projection rooms instead of the original one, the renovations maintained almost unchanged the facade of the building and preserved the original balcony hidden behind the letters "São Jorge" (see above).
As a matter of fact that same balcony is part of the bar in the first flour (and also in this last photo). With it's fantastic view over the Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue in English), the place has an undisputed presence in my list of Lisbon's perfect places for a mid afternoon coffee.
