SUMMARY

Mia is a high school freshman living in New York City with her mother. Mia's father, who lives in Genova, is a prince. He has kept this a secret and has finally told Mia that she is a princess. Suddenly, Mia's schedule is packed with princess lessons, makeovers, and various other royal duties. To make things worse, Mia's mother has started to date Mia's algebra teacher!

With so much going on, Mia has given little thought to the school dance that is coming up. She is surprised when, Josh, the boy she has a crush on, asks her to be his date to the dance. Later, Mia finds out that Josh was tricking her so he could get his picture in the newspaper. In the end, things work out and Mia has fun at the dance.

REVIEW

The Princess Diaries is a very girlie, fun-loving book - complete with romance. I couldn't get enough of it! Since the story is told in diary form, it is clearly told from Mia's point-of-view. The author did a wonderful job of making Mia a believable teen.

While the princess part of the story is fantasy, the high-school part is realistic fiction. I liked that the book blended both genres so well. The story was an attention-grabber for me.

Mia started out quiet and easily swayed by others. By the end of the book, she was more independent and had found her own voice. I would like to think that I will be independent someday too.
