Radiant Darkness

RADIANT DARKNESS
By: Emily Whitman

SUMMARY

Radiant Darkness is based on the Greek myth "Kidnapped." In this myth, Hades takes Persephone from her mother, Demeter. Demeter does not accept this and causes all sorts of trouble until Persephone is allowed to return for a few months each year.

In Radiant Darkness, Persephone is not taken away by Hades. Instead, Persephone falls in love with Hades and leaves her mother, Demeter, to be with him. Persephone does this because Demeter was very overprotective of her daughter.

Demeter wants Persephone back, so she starts killing mortals. Hades gives Persephone a pomegranate to eat. The pomegranate allows Persephone to move freely from the underworld of Hades to the upper world of Demeter. Persephone is able to set things right with her mother, but still be with Hades too. Demeter promises to be less protective. Everyone is happy!

REVIEW

This book was fabulous! It was an interesting way to spice up an ancient tale. Who would have every expected that Persephone would leave Demeter on her own.

I found the title of the book to be fitting for the story. Persephone lives in both the upper and lower world - Radiant and Dark. She actually ends up with the best of both worlds.

Persephone becomes independent and strong. She makes her own decisions, but is able to stay close to her mother. I like that.
