drizzle
By: Kathleen Van Cleve
SUMMARY
Polly Peabody is eleven and lives on a famous rhubarb farm with her family. There are a few unusual things about this farm. Some of the rhubarb tastes like chocolate and every Monday at exactly 1:00 pm, it rains.
One Monday the rain stops coming and the rhubarb starts to die. Polly’s brother also becomes sick with an unknown illness. Polly desperately wants to find answers. Her Aunt Edith shows her a secret library where ivy grows and insects spell out words. Polly forms relationships with these insects (and some two-headed spiders) as she tries to save the farm.
Clues from the insects lead Polly to her family’s secret. They are able to control the rain with their special powers. Since Polly is not yet 18, she is only able to make it “drizzle” rather than rain. She uses her magical crooked finger to do this and help save the farm.
REVIEW
I first chose this book based on the title and colorful cover. When I read the inside cover I was hooked by the refreshingly different storyline. How often do you see a book about rhubarb?
I absolutely LOVED how this story played out. Polly was like a detective as she worked through the insect clues. She had an interesting relationship with the plants and insects.
If you want to read a very unique and cute story, then this book is for you. No tween drama, but a wonderful story of hope and magic. You can’t go wrong with that!
