After moving to a new town, Pia wishes she could talk to her only friend – her beloved pony, Drummer.  Now with the help of a mysterious statuette, she’s getting an earful!  Who knew sweet-looking Drummer would have an attitude that matches her new rival, Cat, “queen” of the stables?

It’s hard enough being the new girl in a new town, new school, and new stable, but when word spreads of Pia’s pony-whispering powers, Cat’s claws come out.  And just when she thought things couldn’t get worse, Pia’s very own TV show might be headed for disaster.

Luckily, Pia’s growing popularity allows her to help the ponies on the yard, but she’s still worried … will she ever fit in with this crowd?

REVIEW

Pia is on a wild ride.  With the help of a magical little statue, she can hold conversations with horses.  The good news is that she can speak with her trusted horse, Drummer.  She can also help the other horses with their problems.  The bad news is that Pia lets everyone think that SHE holds the magic rather than the statue.  Pia’s lie sets off a series of events that leave her wishing she had never found the statue in the first place.

I did not like that Pia was dishonest by hiding the secret of the statue.  I was also surprised that some of the horses had pretty annoying personalities.  I liked that Pia was trying her best to help the horses, despite what some of the humans had to say about her. 

This middle grade book is a quick read and I would think an animal lover would enjoy it.  The Word on the Yard is the first in a series with five more books coming out.
