Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It’s gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie’s estranged father – an elusive European warlock – only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention from a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it’s her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophia has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.
REVIEW
As soon as I heard the premise of this book, I knew I was going to like it. Sophie, a witch, is sent to a reform school for Prodigium (witches, fairies, and the like) because she is misusing her powers. See what I mean? You just know it’s going to be a great book.
Sophie gets herself into all sorts of crazy situations and her funny personality shines through it all. She is a rather inexperienced witch who makes plenty of mistakes and is somewhat of an outcast. I could relate to Sophie and I found myself rooting for her.
No matter what type of paranormal creature you prefer, they are most likely in this book as a secondary character. Some of them fit into the teen stereotypes and some do not. I can say that there is something for everyone in Hex Hall.
The story itself has some surprises and I didn’t want to put it down. The ending is a TOTAL shocker and it makes me anxious to read the next book. Go out and get yourself a copy of Hex Hall. You can’t miss it with its beautiful turquoise cover.
