INTERVIEW
HEATHER VOGEL FREDERICK
I am such a HUGE fan of Heather’s Mother-Daughter Book Club series. If I were in a mother daughter book club, these are definitely books that I would want to read. They are about girls I can relate to, the moms have their own story line going on, the books are loosely based on classics, and they are funny too. Here are my reviews for The Mother-Daughter Book Club, Much Ado About Anne, Dear Pen Pal, and Pies and Prejudice.
Saying that I was excited about interviewing Heather would be an understatement. I hope you enjoy reading all about it. I was really interested in what she had to say about Concord, Massachusetts since I bought the grown-up version of Little Women last weekend.
Which mother in the book club best represents you?
Well, I hope not Mrs. Chadwick! I suppose Mrs. Hawthorne is my ideal – she is smart and funny and calm in a crisis – but you’d have to ask my sons if I even come close. There’s definitely a bit of tree-hugging Mrs. Wong in me, too.
Pies! Do you have a favorite flavor or maybe a favorite one to bake homemade?
Absolutely! My favorite pie is coconut cream.
Was Concord, Massachusetts based on a town where you have lived?
Concord is a real town, and I really did live there from fourth grade through tenth grade. It’s a beautiful New England village, steeped in literary history – Louisa May Alcott wrote “Little Women” there, and Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau and Nathaniel Hawthorne all lived there, too. Plus, Concord played an important part in the Revolutionary War, so there’s all that history as well.
Were you ever in a mother-son book club with your boys? If not, do you think they would have enjoyed it?
I was not – I don’t think book clubs like that existed back when my sons were growing up. They’re still pretty rare, in fact. If they had been around, though, our younger son would have joined one in a hot second. He definitely inherited the bookworm gene. Our older son, not so much. He likes to read, but he’d much rather be drawing or painting.
Do you practice yoga? I see that the mothers in the book club are really into it.
Ha! Nope, no yoga. Swimming is my sport.
Thank you Heather and thank you Teen Book Scene for arranging this blog tour.
