And once more with Sachin today taking us to Australia to get to know eight Thredbo's facts and bragging rights as well as some suggestions on where to stay...
If you are going to the Thredbo, you can stay at Jindabyne accommodation and make your way daily – especially if you want to mix with a bigger variety of people and save time if you want to visit other resorts. If you are focused on Thredbo, and you want to make it the majority of your stay, this is the article for you.
Claims to fame - Apart from mixing with the most rich and maybe famous, there are other things that Thredbo has claims to fame. The only all year operational ski lift, the highest golf course in Australia and the highest altitude restaurant. If you have the money they are something to put on your I-have-been-to list.
Image - Considered THE alpine styled ski mini-township in Australia, with the luxury hotels and lodges to be enjoyed for those who have the cash. Put on your brand name clothes and mix it with the upper class. Thredbo accommodation is a little more varied than perceived, with a wide range even catering to cheaper budgets, it is just the place to be seen, with only a 4000 person capacity.
Awards - Thredbo has won many Australian awards, such as the best tourism destination of the decade in NSW and has won the Best Luxury Tourism Award many times amongst a list of others.
Self contained - Thredbo is a fully self contained and functioning village with all the normal services to expect, from petrol stations, bakery, through to expensive gift shops and bars.
Climate - Thredbo is close to a two kilometres above sea level, so it rarely gets too hot. The highest ever recorded temp in the village was 30 degrees but the average daily summer temperature is between 14 degrees and 21 degrees. Even when the rest of Australia is scorching, Thredbo continues to have mild climate, and even Autumn nights will be chilly.
Environment - As any good resort should, Thredbo has embarked on a wide range of programs to benefit and protect the local environment and is a partner of the Green Globe project. Thredbo actively engages in resource conservation, renewable energy use, recycling, composting, and other forms of waste reduction, wildlife habitat preservation and environmental education. An absolute must for any tourist destination.
A little more than 50 years - In 2007 Thredbo turned 50 as white Australia established its first settlement there in 1956. The Aboriginal people had been living there in permanent way for anywhere between 10,000 and 5,000 years previous. The upper slopes were regarded as no-mans land, held in trust for the tribes and because of the winter chill remained uninhabited. The Aborigines that moved to the base of the mountains formed four major tribal groups: the YA-itmathang, the Wolgal, the Waradgery and the Ngarigo.
Population - Thredbo only has a permanent population of 200 people that grew out of a few settler's vision to create an all year round mountain resort back in 1955.
