GOODREADS SUMMARY
In 1897 England, sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne has no one…except the "thing" inside her.
When a young lord tries to take advantage of Finley, she fights back. And wins. But no normal Victorian girl has a darker side that makes her capable of knocking out a full-grown man with one punch….
Only Griffin King sees the magical darkness inside her that says she's special, says she's one of them. The orphaned duke takes her in from the gaslit streets against the wishes of his band of misfits: Emily, who has her own special abilities and an unrequited love for Sam, who is part robot; and Jasper, an American cowboy with a shadowy secret.
Griffin's investigating a criminal called The Machinist, the mastermind behind several recent crimes by automatons. Finley thinks she can help—and finally be a part of something, finally fit in.
But The Machinist wants to tear Griff's little company of strays apart, and it isn't long before trust is tested on all sides. At least Finley knows whose side she's on—even if it seems no one believes her.
REVIEW
Steampunk gains ground in the YA world with Kady Cross’ debut, The Girl in the Steel Corset. With a fantastic blend of old and new, fabulous machines and magical heroes, this genre is sure to capture a large audience.
Set in 1897 England, TGITSC is filled with dark and mysterious streets, luxurious mansions, and machines only a mad scientist could dream up. I was transported to a futuristic Victorian age that teased my imagination.
Finley is really two characters in one. At times, Finley is a sweet and content young Victorian girl. At other times, she becomes dark and angry. That’s when her powers kick in and she becomes incredibly strong and even violent. I prefer Finley’s softer side, but WOW she can really do some damage when she wants to.
Then there’s Griffin. He’s the leader of a gang of kids with unusual powers. He offers guidance to Finley and she learns to tame her powers. My favorite member of the gang is Emily who is a good-natured nerdy genius. She is like a girl Einstein!
There’s a crazy bad guy called The Machinist who is wrecking havoc on society. Griffin and his friends get caught up in the investigation of who The Machinist is and how to stop him. Action? Yes! Remarkable machines? Yes! Danger? Yes! Good vs Evil? Yes! Surprises? YES!
If you haven’t given steampunk a chance yet, TGITSC would be a great place to start. If you are already a fan of this genre, you will love how it is brought to life in this thrilling adventure. I can’t wait for book two!

COVER COMMENTS
My gosh, that dress is beautiful. The red is like a fire and the steel corset is amazing. You can just tell that Finley can be tough when she wants to.
