GOODREADS SUMMARY
A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here—one of whom was his own grandfather—were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.
A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.
REVIEW
Look at the cover. It is an old photo of a girl in ruffles in the woods. Look closer. She is FLOATING. Peculiar? For sure. That photo is the first of many creepy vintage photos of peculiar children found throughout the book. They make this story come to life.
Jacob’s grandfather spent a good part of his childhood in a remote orphanage off the coast of Wales. Jacob has grown up with his grandfather sharing unbelievable stories about the peculiar children in that orphanage. Well, those stories weren’t completely unbelievable because Jacob’s grandfather had old photos to prove they were real. When his grandfather dies, Jacob journeys to the orphanage to find answers and see for himself. I love how Ransom Riggs puts so much thought into the setup for the story.
At the orphanage, Jacob discovers that these peculiar children really did once exist. There was an invisible boy and a girl who could create fire out of thin air to name a few. Each child’s description would be crazier than the one before. So creepily good!
Once Jacob learns the fate of the children, he finds himself in a bizarre situation with them. It’s one of the most unusual twists to plot that I have ever read. Unexpected in a good way and perfect for a book about peculiar children.
If you crave something different, something peculiar, then you will go crazy for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Take a chance on something unusual.
