GUEST POST and GIVEAWAY

CHARACTER INTERVIEW

APHRODITE THE DIVA

One of the cool things about myths is that they have gods AND goddesses.  One of my favorites is Aphrodite and I just love how she meets up with Isis in Aphrodite the Diva.  I jumped at the chance to interview both of them.

Thank you to authors Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams, and the Teen {Book} Scene.

Joan & Suzanne: Hi Melina, thank you so much for letting us visit you at Reading Vacation today to help celebrate the release of Goddess Girls #6: Aphrodite the Diva!

The Goddess Girls series puts a modern spin on classic Greek myths, following the ins and outs of divine social life at Mount Olympus Academy, where the most privileged godboys and goddessgirls in the Greek pantheon hone their mythical skills. Aladdin paperbacks (ages 8-12)

The scoop on Aphrodite the Diva: Isis claims she's the goddess of love? Ha! But to keep the title all to herself, Aphrodite has to find the perfect match for Pygmalion, the most annoying boy ever. (August, 2011)

On to the Isis & Aphrodite interview:

How do you get ready in the morning to enhance your amazing beauty?

Isis: I wake up beautiful. Doesn’t everyone? But make-up is an ancient art, which I like to wear for fun. In  Egypt, my goddessgirl friends and I use black kohl, lapis lazuli or green malachite as eyeliner and eyeshadow. To make special eyeshadow colors to match my gown, I mix raw powder with water and animal fat to make a creamy paste, which I apply with a specially-carved stick made from bone or ivory.

Aphrodite: Hey! I wake up beautiful too! We’re so alike, it’s not even funny. I just wanted to add that mortal girls can buy kohl-colored eyeliner and a variety of modern-day eyeshadows to achieve the same goddessy look that me and my friends and Isis wore to  the Mount Olympus Academy Hero Week dance.

Is there a special someone in your own love life? You are the Egyptian and Greek Goddesses of Love and Beauty after all.

Isis: When I visited MOA, there was one godboy who caught my eye. His name was Ares. Hunky, blond; and I love guys in a band. Sadly, he only had eyes for Aphrodite.

Aphrodite: Ha! I knew you liked him!  Well, you’re a good goddess-girlfriend for not trying to steal him away. He drives me crazy sometimes, but he’s my crush. What can you do?

Isis, what was your first reaction to meeting Aphrodite? We all know how she reacted, but I want to know what was going through your mind too. I would have been freaked out!

Isis: I may have acted kewl, but I was definitely freaking out on the inside, Melina. Imagine if someone came along and said, “Hey, I’m you.” That’s what it felt like.

Do you have any love advice to share?

Aphrodite: Yes! How much time do you have? How about if we share our thoughts on how to talk to guys? My number one rule is: Be yourself. I know you’re thinking, really? Yes, really. You don’t like fake people, right? Guys don’t either. So, talk to guys like you would to anyone else. Don’t try to be what you think they want you to be. If you show that you have your own interests, you’ll be a more interesting person.

Isis: Right! But keep in mind that good conversations involve sharing the limelight! So go ahead and talk about yourself, but also ask guys questions and really listen to their answers. One question will lead to another, the conversation will flow back and forth, and before you know it, you’re talking just like you would to any friend. It’s easy once you get used to  it.

I hear that you two have become friends. What is it like hanging out with someone so similar to you?

Isis: & Aphrodite: It’s epic! (Both laugh at saying the exact same thing.) Jinx.

Isis: Our meeting was rocky. I mean, we were both in a contest to see who could find a crush for this guy named Pygmalion. Everyone in our home countries  was rooting for their goddess.. Talk about pressure! But we got to know each other pretty fast and wound up working together in the end. Turns out that we have a lot in common being goddesses of love.

Aphrodite: That’s for sure. We still keep in touch, talking over our matchmaking advice and discussing lonely hearts problems. We love helping mortals look their best, and helping them to find love.

Thanks again, Melina! ~ Joan, Suzanne, Aphrodite, and Isis
