GOODREADS SUMMARY

Littlest One is a tiny creature slowly learning her job of giving dreams to humans. Each night she and her teacher, Thin Elderly, visit an old woman’s home where she softly touches beloved objects, gathering happy memories, and drops of old scents and sounds. Littlest One pieces these bits together and presents them to her sleeping human in the form of pleasant dreams. But the dreaded Sinisteeds, dark fearsome creatures that plague their victims with nightmares, are always at work against the dreamgivers. When the old woman takes in John, an angry foster child with a troubled past, the Sinisteeds go after him with their horrifying nightmares. Can Littlest One, and her touch light as gossamer, protect John’s heart and soul from the nightmare of his dark past?

REVIEW

Gossamer is a fairy tale about Littlest One, who is a dreamgiver. She touches objects and transfers the memories from those objects to humans as happy dreams. Littlest One is curious, playful, caring, and brave. She has a cute way of asking her superiors all kinds of silly questions. Littlest One wanted the best for the humans in her house, and she tried to make their lives better.

The world of dreamgivers is interesting. They live in a cloud castle and must always be in the dark. These dreamgivers have the power of invisibility and they can fly. It’s a magical world filled with history and traditions. I was whisked away to the land of dreamgivers.  Lois Lowry's descriptions have somewhat of a childish feel to them which was a surprise.

There’s a dark side to the story in the human world concerning John and his past. It’s the type of sad past that is often part of a classic fairy tale and it is an important part of this story. I liked how Lois Lowry intertwined the human world and the dreamgiver world. They live together in a sort of harmony which brings both aspects of the story into one.

COVER COMMENTS

This cover is gorgeous. It looks like fairy dust is falling on the sleeping person’s face. It’s so pretty and it sparkles. You’ll have to read the book for the title to make sense.
