There is a lovely blog meme running around the web at the moment, started by hostelbookers, with the idea being that travel bloggers share seven photos from their travels. Not just any old photos though, these photos have to match the following seven categories:
- A photo that…takes my breath away
- A photo that…makes me laugh or smile
- A photo that…makes me dream
- A photo that…makes me think
- A photo that…makes my mouth water
- A photo that…tells a story
- A photo that…I am most proud of (aka my worthy of National Geographic shot)
I was nominated to take part in this by the lovely Erin of De La Pura Vida (and if you’re heading to Costa Rica, you should definitely check her site out!). Photography being one of my main passions, I’m obviously very excited to be able to take part.. the only tough thing was picking the photos!
A photo that…takes my breath away
This is one of my favourite HDR photos I’ve done, a combination of three different shots blended together to produce this one. I absolutely love the clouds and the sky, presided over by the absolutely spectacular Mount Taranaki in New Zealand.
I was overwhelmed by how popular this shot was on my facebook page. It really seemed to resonate with the locals of the Taranaki region, many of whom said I had managed to paint their mountain in a way they had never seen it. Many thanks to the involvement of the Taranaki Regional tourism board on facebook for helping to share this :)
I climbed Taranaki while I was out in New Zealand, and it is by far my favourite day hike in New Zealand. Although it will take your breath away ;)
A photo that…makes me laugh or smile
Like its antipodean neighbour, New Zealand is a country with an obsession with giant things. Quite what makes a village think that the only thing that is missing from its sight seeing list is a gigantic concrete carrot is beyond me, but it makes for some photographic opportunities. I’m sure you can think of your own joke to insert for this one ;)
A photo that…makes me dream
A rainbow. And a sunset! And New Zealand’s southern alps in the background, dusted in snow. It is the stuff that dreams are made of, which was a theme for most of my trip around New Zealand. This was just one of the most spectacular natural sights I’ve ever seen, in a land that provided no end of them. If you’ve not been to New Zealand yet, get going. It’s an amazing place!
A photo that…makes me think
In June 1944, a German SS Panzer division rolled into the town of Oradour-Sur-Glane in rural France, rounded up 642 town people, and executed them. The women and children were taken to the church to be shot and then burned alive, whilst the men were dealt with in a barn. The town has been preserved ever since in the state it was left in on that day.
It’s not a happy place to visit, but it makes me think as to the sadness and unspeakable acts that still go on around us in the world today, nearly seventy years on.

I’ve never really gotten into taking photos of my food, mostly because I want to eat it too fast. Still, I was very proud of this smoked tuna salad that I put together whilst travelling through New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula. So here’s a photo of that.
A photo that…tells a story
On the east coast of Australia, there are a number of coastal towns which feature breakwaters composed of kilometre long stretches of jumbled up bits of rock. It has become a bit of a thing to write things on these rocks. Whilst most of the writing are of the fairly banal “I was here” type, sometimes you are lucky and come across something a little more significant.
I’m not sure what drove the author to share with the world via the medium of a rock this piece of news, nor what role the rock had in the pregnancy. But there is a definite story here.

This photo, of Antony Gormley’s Inside Australia art installation in Western Australia, won me the weekly travel photography competition in the Times of England, no less. Which was pretty exciting. It is also, handily, the correct alignment for a National Geographic cover. Still waiting on that call…
