Best sun glasses for Hawaii vacation

Are you wondering what the best sun glasses are for your Hawaii vacation and whether your 'old' sun glasses will still do for your 2012 Hawaii beach vacation? OK your sun glasses have nice dark shades and served you well in the past. They even have polarized lenses as health experts recommend. However, ladies here is the deal. Now and then we need to make a 'fashion statement'! So forget about the $20 - 30 polarized sun glasses from WalMart. Designer sun glasses are 'in', and you deserve them no matter whether your hubbie asks you 'Do you really need those sun glasses?' 'No, not REALLY but I want them' was my answer to Keoki.

Best sun glasses for Hawaii vacation from Margaritaville
This all happened when I came across those stylish sun glasses from Margaritaville Eyewear. I knew immediately I'd found what I wanted: state-of-the-art polarized lenses for best protection of my eyes from strong tropical Hawaiian sun combined with fancy styles of frames, shades and tinting. Now the question was not any more whether I really wanted to spend that kind of money on designer glasses but to choose from a huge variety of tropical sun glasses, sun glasses I like best for Hawaii and Hawaii vacation. The Calypso style sun glasses are MY favorite shades (photos courtesy by Margaritaville Eyewear).

My stylish Calypso sun glasses for Hawaii
Instead of my conventional brown frame sun glasses from the past, I chose the white/conch colored frame this time! Perfect tropical sun glasses for hanging out on Hawaii's white sand beaches and the right match for my new classy white cover-up I bought in Rome this summer. Too bad that I did not have those stylish sun glasses there, yet. OK no beaches or oceans in Rome but I tell you Rome's ladies are very fashion conscious and I would have fit right in with my new shades.

Anyways, I love my Margaritaville sun glasses. The stylish, light weight, tropical design is perfect for Hawaii vacations. Best tropical sun glass designs are of course a matter of personal taste but the big variety of Margaritaville shades allow everybody to find their personal best sunglasses for Hawaii vacation.Visit Hawaii in style and feel good about your fun-in-the-sun eye protection. Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations
p.s.
Of course, Keoki could not resist and had to try on my new fancy Calypso sun glasses. The design is not really for a guy. OK maybe Elton John but here is what Keoki said: Very stylish and sooo smooth. Wearing these shades is like giving my eyes a massage!

3 Reasons to Visit Hawaii this Summer

Everybody around the globe and in Hawaii is talking about the Economic Slowdown. We even offer Keoki's Hawaii Stretch DVD at an 'Economic Slowdown' price for $18.50. Everybody has become very considerate about how and when to spend money. People start to cut back their expenses with anything that does not seem necessary or important like a vacation in Hawaii. Visiting Hawaii this summer has become for them a dream for the future, unless they win a free trip to Hawaii.

Hapuna Beach from Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel

Who'd actually believe that there is actually no better time than this summer to book a trip to Hawaii instead of spending the money on traveling the Mainland. Here is what Best Hawaii Vacation blog editors, Pua + Keoki, think why it is a good time to visit Hawaii this summer.

3 Reasons to Visit Hawaii this summer

1. Air fares to Hawaii are at bargain prices this summer

At least when we compare the fares to ticket prices to Hawaii in the past few years. The economic slowdown forces the Hawaii carriers to come up with unbelievable low RT fares to Hawaii for this summer. This applies to Interisland ticket prices too. Just remember that about 9 mos. ago a one-way Hawaii Interisland ticket was about $150, when one did not fly in the very early morning or late at night. Today, a round-trip ticket with IflyGo from Honolulu, Oahu to Kona, Big Island is $48! With those low Interisland rates, Hawaii island hopping has become very popular again. Most of our Hawaii visitors currently visit two Hawaiian islands on Hawaii vacation.

2. Hawaii Vacation Rental hosts consider your best offer

Why shouldn't they? It's all about bookings for their vacation homes in Hawaii. They have mortgages or monthly payments for their cars to pay, school tuition and more. Smart vacation rental owners will consider your offer. Advice from us: Be reasonable with your offer and consider what you already get for free - compared to a stay at a Hawaii hotel. Don't forget electricity costs for AC and hot water in Hawaii is one of the highest in the nation.

Be aware that Hawaii beach rental owners are used to charging high rates (and always got those in the past) and are not always willing to come down with their rates. Hawaii rentals within 10 - 15 min. drive to beaches are more willing to make special offers this summer. Mostly those rentals are at a higher elevation, which allows you a comfortable sleep in the cooler air esp. during summer vacation.

3. Hawaii Vacation Effect - Priceless!

Is it the beach, the endless ocean, the swaying palm trees, the Maitai or the pretty hula dancer which makes the Hawaii vacation one of the most relaxing and recuperating of vacation destinations around the world? Who knows! But ask anybody who visited Hawaii and can compare his Hawaii vacation with other destinations, in most cases, Hawaii vacation memories don't fade. On the contrary, Hawaii and Hawaii vacation memories become more vivid with the number of passing years and 'haunt' you till you go back to Hawaii. Visit Hawaii this summer and come back as a new 'You', ready to take on the world!

As usual, we'd love to hear from you with more reasons why to visit Hawaii this summer. Mahalo and aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations

What's Hawaii like in April?

Welcome back everybody to Best Hawaii Vacation,
Are you one of those Hawaii visitors who always wondered what the island weather is like in April in Hawaii for vacation? April and May are definitely great months to save money in Hawaii on Airfares to Hawaii, island car rentals and most of all, on Hawaii rental accommodation. Vacation rental owners offer Hawaii vacation deals for April, which are too good to be turned down. Best of all: no extra Hawaii resort fees for parking, Internet, kitchen, snorkel gear and much more! Find Hawaii vacation rentals for April 2009 in our next post.

When you visit Hawaii in April or May, be prepared though to close your convertible when visiting upcountry Maui or Big Island because temperatures are definitely much colder there and spring months are more prone to upcountry showers. Hawaii coastal weather is most steady and sunny on the West coasts of the Hawaiian Islands. April may show have some unexpected sprinkles and trade winds picking up now and then on the beaches - more than during the summer months - but as soon as the sun makes it through the clouds, beach goers are back, at least for a relaxing beach walk.

Mauna Kea Beach in April
We are happy to welcome back Bill Jardine, long time Hawaii resident and Big Island real estate agent, whose January 2009 blog article about the 'Hawaii Real Estate Market 2009' found a big number of readers, especially those who are looking into buying Hawaii real estate through a buyer's agent.

Here is what Bill has to say about 'April in Hawaii'. Bill lives on the Kohala Coast half the way between Waimea town and our best Kohala Coast beaches. See location on our Big Island map.

Cloudy skies in Upcountry Waimea in April
"Far out in the north Pacific, there is really nothing to impede the weather from doing whatever it likes. This is the time of year that our giant equatorial weather system begins to warm up and flex huge summer muscles. At the same time, the arctic polar bear that has been dominating the furious storms between Hawaii and the Aleutians is struggling to retain its grip with cold claws and icy winds. In Waimea we enjoy the blessings of sweet, fresh ocean breezes as well as the harshness of the winter gales that charge across the broad reaches of the empty sea. This winter has been windy, too windy for kites but perfect for whitecaps, and this month the great humpback whales are turning their heads north once more.

There has been a pod of sperm whales here lately, and it is very exciting to see them lying like great locomotives far out to sea. Their oblique spouts now stream in the wind as their great heads drive through the endless swells. There is something special about the great sperm whales in their self-imposed seclusion. They stay close together, speaking quietly to each other, and their secrets are complete. A fellow fisherman once told me that he had seen one steaming down the channel, as fast as a ship, splitting the whitecaps into a mist shot full of rainbows. That image sticks in my mind like nothing else.

Did you know that sperm whales do not use their teeth to eat? Only the great males have teeth anyway, and they just use them to fight each other when love is the prize to be won. Instead of having great teeth, sperm whales have giant muscles in their throats that allow them to swallow their prey whole, then crush it into submission. All this is done in the near perfect darkness a mile or more below the surface, as their calves play in the warm surface waters, watched over their aunties.

We note that this week the stock market has begun to repair, and we are expecting that it will return to health this year. This of course makes realty purchasing much more urgent in terms of getting the best price and financing."

We loved this Hawaii article at first sight. It reflects so much Bill's love for Hawaii and its special beauty which we sometimes take for granted. This what our Best Hawaii Vacation blog is all about - embracing all those many facets of Hawaiian island life and vacation! Aloha and a hui hou. Pua Hawaii Vacations

Our Favorite Hawaiian Flowers

Aloha and welcome back to Best Hawaii Vacation blog,
Blogging about Hawaii comes easy as it's basically sharing all the things we love in Hawaii with Hawaii visitors, especially those, who plan their first trip to the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaiian Orchids On Hawaii, The Orchid Island

We consider our Hawaii Blog the 'appetizer' - awakening the taste buds and nourishing the urge for more - before the big 'entree', the real visit to Hawaii when indulging in white sand beaches, warm waters of the Pacific Ocean and the unique beauty of the Hawaiian tropical fauna and flora.

Colorful Bougainvilleas in Hawaii
Today we want to share with all our blog visitors our favorite Hawaiian flowers. Tropical Hawaiian flowers will catch any Hawaii visitor's attention all over the islands again and again. First time when receiving a beautiful flower lei upon arrival at one of our Hawaii Airports or at your hotel check-in.

Keoki and his friend Mike with orchid flower leis they got for their birthday
Hawaii Resorts, like the Hilton Waikoloa Village we talked about in our recent post, and Hawaii vacation rentals alike are proud of displaying as many of our colorful tropical Hawaiian flowers in your rooms and outside.

Well, what are our favorite Hawaiian flowers? With the abundance of different choices of colors, scents, shapes and texture - Hibiscus, Plumeria, Gardenia, Pikake, Tuberose, Orchids - choosing a specific flower over another does not come easy.

Hawaiian Tropical Flower arrangements at Farmers Market in Hawaii
My favorite Hawaiian flower is the Plumeria, which comes in all beautiful colors, the scent is subtle with a single flower but becomes captivating in the typical Hawaiian Plumeria lei. Don't keep your Plumeria flower lei in the fridge for too long. The flower blossoms become brown spots the next day.

Keoki loves the white blossom of the Tuberose with its seducing scent. It is his favorite Hawaiian flower. Are you wondering now which Hawaiian flower you like best? Great. Let us know your favorite Hawaiian flower. A hui hou. Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations

Humpback Whales are still in Hawaii

A warm aloha to all our Hawaii visitors,
Happy to hear that you like your new Hawaiian T-shirt from Crazy Shirt and even bought several Hawaiian shirts for family and friends as an aloha gift from Hawaii. Believe me they will the shirts. Maybe you even bought a shirt with a Hawaiian humpback whale - or should I better say Alaskan humpback whale - on it, which is a favorite theme for T-shirt makes in Hawaii. Especially the kids love those.

What better experience is there to see the gentle ocean giants, not just on a Tshirt, but in true nature on a Hawaii vacation! It's amazing how many Humpback whales we spot recently and it's already middle of March, time to go home to their Alaskan cold waters. I have a feeling they are gathering for getting ready for their big journey home.

If you have never seen the Imax movie 'Whales', which includes the many dangerous encounters Humpback whales with their new babies are facing on this long trip from Hawaii to Alaska, do it next time you are near an Imax movie. It's a whale experience I will never forget.

Yes, the Humpback whales are everywhere around the Hawaiian islands at the moment. Beach visitors don't just pack towels, beach chairs and sun screen these days but a pair of binoculars belongs to beach equipment in Hawaii for many people as well. It's a funny thing to watch: as soon as one lifts his binoculars, everybody follows with pointing and screaming. Beach visitors get totally excited when seeing a pod of whales or 'just' a whale mama with her newborn calf.

The Humpback whales seem to enjoy the warm Hawaiian ocean waters just as we humans do. It's so much fun to watch the Humpback whales to splash their fluke, blow theirs spouts or even do a breach, the ultimate joy for us people, and I guess for the whales too. If we only could manage to get a photos of the whales! We bought a new fancier digital camera in order to catch more Hawaii photos for our Best Hawaii Vacation blog visitors, according to the motto 'A photo speaks a thousand words'.

But I tell you it's so hard to take a photo of a Humpback whale because you never have the camera ready when they suddenly start performing their 'magic tricks'. I admire everybody who has taken a decent Humpback whale photo from shore. I guess from a whale watch boat is somewhat easier but I have to admit I don't go on boats as I get terrible seasick. Well, if your belong to the lucky Hawaii vosotors or residents who have a great Humpback whale photo. please, share with our Hawaii blog visitors.
Mahalo for your photo and comment. Aloha Pua Hawaii Vacations
p.s.
I can't believe my luck when I searched youtube for Humpback whale videos 2009 and found the one above from Paul Hugel Humpback Whales from The Frogman 2 charter boat in Maalaea Maui. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Mahalo Paul!

I was also totally captivated by the this story 'Whale watchers witness possible birth in Kohala' which was published yesterday in West Hawaii Today. Several Big Island residents claim they have witnessed a humpback whale give birth Tuesday morning! A Humpback whale story worthwhile reading!

Cheap Interisland Flights

Flight alert for all Hawaii travelers on interisland flights!

Amazing how flight prices can change around within a few months! In our July post about Big Island and Kauai we recommended to Hawaii travelers between the islands, either to stay away from extra interisland flights or even use the superferry if available for the island of your choice.

On our recent Hawaiian Island Hopping blog post from December 8th we told Hawaiian visitors:
"Here is the good news. Island hopping has become affordable again. Mokulele Airlines offers some decent flight rates and Hawaiian Airlines - their recent rates were beyond reasonable - just followed suit and lowered their interisland rates to $61 one-way between Honolulu and all major Hawaiian airports. New Interisland rates started 11/19/2008."

I assumed that's the best Hawaiian air lines can come up with for a while but as competition between the major airlines for Hawaiian Interisland flights, Hawaiian, IflyGo and Mokulele Airlines intensified, interisland fares came down another notch. If you book and interisland flight to Kona Big Island or Lihue Kauai by tomorrow, one-way fare is only $39 for travel through Dec. 31 and $48 through January 31. Check for individual restrictions with each air line.

Believe us Hawaii visitors and Hawaii residents alike cannot be happier about these cheap Interisland flights. Lowering the flight rates came at the perfect time - for the holiday season. It's the cheapest interisland flights we have seen in years. Hope it will stay that way to give our Hawaii Tourism industry another boost. Catch a flight to Kona now. Enjoy your interisland flight. Aloha, Pua Hawaii vacations

Hawaii Kapalua Maui

Amber invites you to Kapalua Maui

As the the snow birds are getting ready for their winter vacation in Hawaii, we'd better cover some more areas of interest for Hawaii travel after our recent excursion to Molokai's Fishponds. Our September post 'Big Island or Maui Vacation' on Best Hawaii Vacation blog hopefully helped Hawaii travelers to make their final decision which Hawaiian island it's gonna be this year for their special Hawaii vacation. If Maui has come ahead of the Big Island, today's article about Kapalua on West Maui is for you. What's there to do and to see?

The experienced Hawaii traveler knows that the west coasts of the Hawaiian islands are blessed with plenty of sunshine, stretches of white sand beaches and reef lined coastal waters, perfect for snorkelers, divers and swimmers. This is not any different with the area of Kapalua on West Maui. The unique tropical beauty, historic sites and premier golf courses attract thousands of visitors to Kapalua at the northwest end of the island of Maui.

Elegant Kapalua is quietly nestled among tall Cook Pines which give the popular resort a countryside feeling. The five bays of Kapalua are sheltered by lava peninsula, which actually gave Kapalua its name which can be interpreted as "arms embracing the sea". Speaking of surroundings and natural beauty of Kapalua, one has to mention thousands of acres of pinapple which surround the resort and give the hillsides a blue-green tint. By the way, the Kapalua Nature Society offers guided nature hikes into the nearby rain forest.

The 23,000-acre Kapalua Resort can be considered as Hawaii's #1 Golf Resort. Passionate golfers may choose from three championship golf courses - including the Plantation Course, home of the prestigious PGA TOUR Mercedes Championship! - state-of-the-art golf academy and value-added golf packages. Not a golfer?! Kapalua Resort features three white sand beaches, two tennis complexes, restaurants, boutiques and galleries. You don't need to drive or walk far to find your favorite Maui things to do. Kapalua Resort has it all lined up for you. I've found some nice Kapalua photos on Tripadvisor taken by Maui visitors.

Now, the question is where to stay when one wants to enjoy this Hawaii luxury resort. Kapalua Villas are a great choice for those who are not on a budget. We recommend the budget conscious traveler to check out the Kapalua Condos for more affordable Maui vacation. As usual, we would like to hear from you about your Hawaii Kapalua Vacation on Maui. What do you like best in Kapalua? Mahalo, Pua Hawaii Vacations

Hiking in Hawaii

You may leave a comment on that birthday invitation post or if you have a hard time to do so, just email us the title of the Hawaii article you liked best. Everybody who votes, will get a link to his blog or site on our Hawaii birthday celebration blog post 7/27/08.

Hiking Pololu Valley, Hiking HawaiiRecently, the question came up on Yahoo questions what to do in Hawaii when on a summer vacation. Interestingly, the Hawaii visitors also wanted to know whether 'Hiking' is a good option for things to do on a summer vacation in Hawaii. To be honest, I did not win the credits for best answer this time but decided to share what I wrote about hiking on the Hawaiian Islands.

There is definitely great hiking on all the Hawaiian islands - to hidden waterfalls and spectacular valleys! Maybe it sounds odd but you can even get lost when hiking in Hawaii. So definitely tell your friends or hosts where you intend to go for your hike. For challenging hikes, make sure you don't go by yourself but with a hiking companion.

There are great hiking books available plus the Hawaii Island Revealed books, there is one for each island, also make hiking suggestions!

Hiking the Na Pali Coast on Kauai is one of those challenging hiking adventures. You want to have the right outfit and have somebody with you who has done it before. We didn't do that one but we had a wonderful hike to the Fern Grotto on Kauai after Kayaking the Wailua River. No guide needed for kayaking or hiking!

Maui has a lot of trails around Haleakala. If interested in hiking on Mauai, visit Maui Island Hiking Trails which offers a map with Maui hiking trails, hiking destinations and hike description with length of hike and level of hike.

I am not too familiar with hiking on Oahu but Frommer's - Frommer's Hawaii 2008 is a perfect book to have for your trip to Hawaii anyways - lists a lot of great Oahu hiking trails and resources.

Hiking Hawaii, Hiking ancient ocean trails, King's Trail on the Big Island
The Big Island offers exciting hikes, around and into Waipio Valley on the Hamakua Coast and Pololu Valley in North Kohala. When hiking into the valleys (Pololu is much easier than Waipio), it's an experience of a life time you won't forget. Just one suggestion: better don't go swimming in the ocean there, as you are not familiar with undercurrents in the area.

You will find a lot of hiking on the Big Island in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Our favorite trail is the Kilauea Iki Trail. When you follow the signs of the Park Rangers, it is very safe. And which of your friends can say they have seen a live volcano and real red glowing lava on their vacation?!

Hiking should be something different and exciting on your summer vacation in Hawaii. Have fun. What's your favorite hike in Hawaii? Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations
p.s.
Summer in Hawaii can be very hot but as hikes are mostly leading into higher elevation hillside and mountain territory, it will be a nice change to lying on the beach all day long. Don't forget: hat + plenty of water + sunscreen when hiking in Hawaii!

How to Save Money on Gas in Hawaii?

Hawaiian calendar girlAloha Hawaii travelers,

It's time to tackle something more important than shopping for a bikini or Aloha shirt in Hawaii. When dealing with Hawaii vacation on a daily basis, the last few months have shown that travel priorities shifted and questions like "Where can I get the lowest airfares to Hawaii?", "When is the cheapest month to travel to Hawaii", "Which car rental company in Hawaii offers the cheapest rental rates?" are dominating Hawaii travel forums and Hawaii blogs." Well, you get the picture!

We are all well aware that a Hawaii vacation was always kind of exclusive and special. Now it seems with more and more tourists shopping for the lowest and cheapest rates and fares, we feel like we need to jump start the Hawaii vacation 'engine' and come up with some money saving ideas especially when facing the rising gas prices on the Mainland and in Hawaii.

Before pulling some tricks from my hat, I'd still like to say this: To my mind, it's a misconception, that Hawaii gas prices are generally quoted as the highest in the nation. It all depends where you are on the island and where you fill your tank! However, what is a fact gas prices are higher this year than they were on your last Hawaii vacation. A few driving and strategic adjustments might be necessary to help you to save gas in Hawaii:

Of course, just as in the past the further the gas station is away from the harbor where the gas actually arrives on the Hawaii island, where you are vacationing on, the more money you pay.

7 Best tips for saving money on gas in Hawaii:

1.
Get gas right in downtown in Hawaii cities (Honolulu, Kahalui, Lihue, Kona, Hilo).
2.
Get gas at the cheapest gas stations, which are Costco gas stations and Aloha Gas Stations in Hawaii.
3.
If you see cheaper gas, buy it now. The price of gas seems to go up daily. Buying often can save you money.
4.
Plan your trips carefully. Combine your shopping for Hawaiian gifts, visiting galleries with grocery shopping and even nightly entertainment like watching hula dancers.
5.
If you want to explore the entire Big Island of Hawaii, you might want to stay at more than one vacation rental to save gas on going back and forth long distances. Explore one area at a time!
6.
When you stay at a Hawaii hotel, use free hotel shuttle service as often as you can, to shopping, to golf, spas etc.
7.
Last but not least, use the Internet and research where to find the lowest gas prices on the Hawaii island where you stay. The following sites will hopefully help you locating the lowest gas prices for your vacation area:

Find lowest and highest gas prices at different Honolulu locations and from different gas companies at Honolulu Gas Prices.

Hawaii Gas Prices lists the lowest regular gas prices for all Hawaii between $4.04 and $4.23 over the last 72 hrs. (as of 6/12/08) with Aloha, Costco and Chevron having the cheapest offers. Highest gas prices for Hawaii over the last 72 hrs. (as of 16/12/08) are $4.53. These record gas prices are offered mostly by Shell gas stations and a few Chevron.

In addition, you may check the MotorTrend site where you can find the lowest gas prices in Hawaii according to island and county where you spend your Hawaii vacation:
Great to see that there a lot of useful resources available on the Internet for all Hawaii vacation issues, even 'where to find the lowest gas prices in Hawaii'. We are grateful! Feel free to leave a comment. Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations
p.s.
Our Hawaii post girl is Korri again. Much mahalo Kawika from WahineStyle. Your Hawaiian calendar girls are really beautiful and you did a great job photographing them!

Hawaii Vacation Insurance

One of our biggest categories on Best Hawaii Vacations is the one offering Hawaii Vacation Tips, which does not come as a surprise. This is the main reason why we write this blog. We'd like to share everything we know about Hawaii and Hawaii vacations from our many years as hosts of Kohala Coast vacation rentals, whether it's practical tips for parents about Hawaii Activity Books, the best way to start your Hawaii vacation, where to buy fresh fruits or why deciding for a Hawaii vacation rental instead of staying at a resort or hotel. From seemingly little practical questions to big issues, like when is the best time for a Hawaii vacation or which Hawaiian Island to visit, we try to give you our best answers.

One question we have not covered so far is whether you should buy travel or health insurance for your Hawaii vacation. OK here we go. In all those years as vacation rental hosts, we experienced a few cancellations due to personal accidents or sudden health issues of the traveler or a close family member. A person might suddenly lose his or her job and has to cancel his long planned trip to Hawaii. Even when believing in positive thinking, unexpected things can happen to all of us. You want to protect your money by signing up for a travel insurance. Again it's an insurance. It's taking a precaution. In 90% (or higher) of all the Hawaii travels probably things work out perfectly.

Hawaii Vacation at its best

We noticed that most of our Hawaii visitors from Europe had travel insurance. One of the reasons probably being the much higher costs for air fares from Europe and much longer planning their Hawaii vacation in advance. We had guests booking their rental cottage even up to one year prior to starting their trip to Hawaii. When one had to cancel their Hawaii vacation, it's bad enough after all that planning plus there was big money at stake. Having travel insurance was at least protected them from the financial loss!

Here are a few recommendations before you buy a Hawaii Travel Insurance. Check your existing insurance policies and credit card coverage before you buy travel insurance. American Express card members enjoy the exceptional travel benefits, including: Global Assist® Hotline , Car Rental Insurance, Travel Accident Insurance Visa card holders enjoy special travel services and benefits when owning Visa Premium Rewards cards. We definitely advise to pay with your credit card as much as possible, especially for air fare tickets to Hawaii. Be protected so you won't lose your money when airlines go out of business like Aloha Airlines and ATA.

Despite of all the above travel benefits through your credit card, you might want to consider trip-cancellation insurance. It will help you get your money back if you have to back out of a trip or if you have to go home early. The cost of travel insurance varies widely mostly between 5 - 8% of the total cost of your vacation. Read the fine print what reasons are allowed for cancellation. Be aware that insurers usually won't cover vague fears!

Travel Insurance Companies

Travel insurance policies vary; so make sure you get what you want for your Hawaii travel. Here are a few travel insurance companies, which we found when searching online. We cannot recommend one or the other. Make your choice which one offers the best coverage for your individual needs for your trip to Hawaii: Travel Guard International tel 800-826-4919, Access America tel. 800-284-8300, Travel Insure tel. 800-937-1387, or Travelex Insurance Services tel. 800-228-9792

Hawaii Travel Health Insurance

Most health insurance policies cover you, when you get sick on vacation but check, particularly if you're insured with an HMO. I had my insurance company mail me the form for health care when going on vacation. In most cases, you can also download this doctor's visit form from your health care company's website. I think it's good to have it with me on my travels. Then you know exactly what my health care insurer needs to reimburse my costs. For additional medical insurance, check with MEDEX Assistance tel. 410-453-6300.

Hawaii Flight Luggage Insurance

Make sure whether your credit card covers your lost luggage and upto what value. Same applies with the airlines. Checked baggage is covered by the Airline you are flying to Hawaii. You might want to check with the airline how much your luggage is covered if/when getting lost. If your luggage is lost, immediately file a lost-luggage claim at the airport, listing all the luggage contents.

Remember, you must report delayed, damaged, or lost baggage within 4 hours of arrival! For your peace of mind, in all the cases when luggage to Hawaii did not arrive with our guests, the airline delivered it at the latest the next day. Good idea to have essentials + your bathing suit in your carry-on, so you can start your vacation in Paradise immediately!

Hoping our recommendations will help plan your Hawaii vacation the best way you can. Have a wonderful vacation in Hawaii! Anything we forgot to mention about Hawaii travel insurance, please, share with our blog visitors. Mahalo and aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations

What about a massage in Hawaii?

Relax in Hawaii with a Spa visit Aloha Hawaii travelers,
For all those who are ready for their Summer Vacation in Hawaii and already wonder what to do first after their arrival on the islands. Here is what Pua and Keoki, your editors from Best Hawaii Vacations and retired licensed Hawaii massage therapists, recommend. Let's say you stay at an oceanfront hotel, there is nothing which can beat a first dip into the clear warm waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Next best thing to begin your Hawaii vacation to melt away your Mainland tension and allow you to enjoy our island atmosphere is to get a massage from an experienced licensed massage therapist. We already talked about in former posts that Hawaii healing vacations - see our related article links in the bottom of this post - are more and more in demand. Life on the Mainland is too busy, and people have a hard time to slow down. Travelers come to the islands to relax and let go. What better way is there than a therapeutic massage?! Make your massage appointment ahead of your arrival time, so it's a fixed 'date' in your vacation schedule.

Most everybody who had a massage before knows that there are lots of different massage techniques like: Swedish Massage, Shiatsu (Acupressure), Trigger Point Therapy, Reiki, Cranio-Sacral Therapy and last but not least, the popular Hawaiian style Lomi Lomi Massage. Every Lomi Lomi Practitioner does it in the unique style of his or her kumu (teachers).

Like the European massage, Lomilomi, the traditional Hawaiian massage, uses kneading and gliding strokes for increasing circulation, soothing nerves and loosening tight muscles. Any experienced massage therapist treats the whole person with paying close attention to the body and mind connection. Lomilomi practitioners go one step further including the spirit into the Lomilomi treatment through prayer, chants and aloha.

As a therapeutic massage at one of the Hawaiian hotel spas starts at $120/hr and ocean front cabana massages are available from $160/hr., we are well aware that a lot of you think you cannot afford this luxury treatment. Here are a few tips from us.

How to get your best massage in Hawaii for the most affordable rate:

1. Hawaii hotel spa and massage packages

Quite a number of hotels in Hawaii offer packages with their room rate, which can include special golf rates or special massage rates. So before you book your hotel, find out whether they are offering a Spa Vacation Package. If you you plan of having 2 or 3 massages anyway, why not get them at the best price with your package.

2. Book your massage at your vacation rental with a local therapist

When you stay at a private vacation rental, check the Yellow Pages in the area, talk to your hosts and locals which massage therapists are experienced and what kind of treatment they offer (you don't want to be disappointed afterwards). Most licensed massage therapists offer out-call service at a very reasonable rate compared to Hawaii hotel spas. Make sure with your hosts that they agree with having a therapist bring his/her table for a massage to your rental home.

3. How to save the most on a massage in Hawaii?

Of course, you guessed it. Do just the same as above but take your rental car and drive to the massage therapist's office. You will be amazed how Hawaiian massage therapists create an atmosphere of utmost relaxation for their clients, locals or vacationers. The only negative part with this arrangement, you have to drive back to your hotel or vacation rental. Why not combine the town visit with getting some groceries, Hawaiian fruits or Hawaiian gift shopping done?!

Well, I am nearly done with today's post, which was a lot of fun as we are so closely connected with the topic of getting massages in Hawaii. As we love to share Hawaii vacation tips with you, we figured to include the following spas which About.com lists as the best in Hawaii

Best Spas in Hawaii by About.com

SpaHalekulani, Halekulani, Honolulu
Spa Suites at Kahala Mandarin Oriental, Honolulu
Hualalai Sports Club and Spa, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Ka’upulehu-Kona
Spa Grande at Grand Wailea Resort, Maui
The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, Wailea, Maui
Spa Moana, Hyatt Regency Maui, Lahaina
Spa Kea Lani at The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui, Wailea, Maui

Surprisingly, this list does not include one of our fine spas from the Kohala Coast. OK I cannot resist naming at least two of our favorite spa choices for the Big Island, which are actually both at the Mauna Lani Beach Resort: Mauna Lani Spa at Mauna Lani Beach Hotel and Bungalows and Spa Without Walls at Fairmont Orchid. Check them out when you are on the Kohala Coast and let us know what you think and what you liked best.

As usual, we ask all of our Hawaii blog visitors to leave a comment about spas and massage in Hawaii. Mahalo and aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations Kohala Coast Spas

What does a Hawaii Vacation cost?

Well, we all know the costs for a Hawaii vacation cannot compare with an all-inclusive vacation in Mexico! But again there is no place like Hawaii! I get really mad when Hawaii travel websites pretend to offer all-inclusive Hawaii vacations. There is not such a thing. Advertising all-inclusive Hawaii vacations is misleading and false promises. You really pay for what you get. If breakfast is included in your hotel stay in Hawaii, believe me this is not free. But let's come to the point of this post: How much does a Hawaii vacation really cost?
Plan your Hawaii Vacation today

Definitely not $792/day average for lodging and food in Hawaii as recently announced by the American Automobile Association AAA. Coming up with a figure like that really stirred reactions in the Hawaii blogger community and probably by all those travelers who love to vacation in Hawaii. You bet that all the major newspapers picked up on this Hawaii vacation 'quote'. We appreciate what our friends Jeff and Rob from Beat of Hawaii had to say about it in their post Conflict of Interest in AAA Hawaii Report We don't want to repeat their concerns and considerations. We warmly recommend to go and visit their blog for further details.

Here are a few thoughts from Best Hawaii Vacations editors. Nobody doubts that it's easy to spend the quoted amount of $795, actually just for lodging at any of our 5- star Hawaii Beach Resorts. However, we are talking a quote for average costs of lodging and food for a Hawaii vacation.

In all these years which we have been running our Hawaii vacation rental business and having hosted hundreds of guests, we've never come across visitors who spent $80/meal, meaning $80 for breakfast, lunch and dinner each as listed by AAA! What a luxury! The average couple visiting Hawaii probably has 2 or 3 dinners between $100 - $120 (prices at Hawaii restaurants went up quite a bit like anywhere on the Mainland) and adding that to a daily rate for an affordable fully equipped Hawaii vacation rental of $85 - $150/nt., this definitely does not add up to the AAA Hawaii Vacation quote.

Bottom line: Hawaii vacations are still possible for the average Hawaii visitor but tourists will have to set priorities. With high gas prices, those who visit Hawaii on a budget might want to limit their driving activity around the Hawaiian islands and be selective with choosing activities. Does it need to be this special helicopter flight or would a hike through a wonderful rainforest valley do? What concerns us more is the fall-out of Aloha Airlines and ATA.

Hawaiian Airline is in the process to cover those old Aloha flight routes from the Mainland to Hawaii. It was bad news for all those who accumulated thousands of miles with Aloha and lost them all. We learned to use our miles as soon as we can get a flight for it! One never knows what can happen. Hey, if you are in love with Hawaii, it's a good idea to sign up with Hawaiian for email updates to find the lowest fares the minute they are available.

And again, Hawaii business owners are awaiting you with their hospitality and aloha spirit. Come visit Hawaii. Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations

How safe are Hawaii Beaches - A Life or Death Story

Aloha to all our Best Hawaii Vacations blog readers. We were so happy about all the great responses on our recent post about 5 Hawaii myths. We really received some great suggestions for Hawaii myth #5. When we had a closer look at all the good suggestions, we decided Sheila's suggestion is definitely one of special interest for anybody who visits Hawaii, no matter on what Hawaiian island they stay.

Here is what Sheila said "I would say that most people assume that all the beautiful beaches are completely safe. Some beaches have dangerous currents, but people just hop in the water without checking for any safety concerns. They ignore beach safety signs and then get in trouble. I like to encourage people to check the official beach safety website.

This is to all Hawaii visitors from Pua: You don't want to have to learn this through your own lesson. Here is one scary story, no legend, no myth but real, scary real!

It was on one of those gorgeous blue sky winter days with extremely high surf on all the west shores of Hawaii Big Island. Huge rollers coming in with close to shore breaking. We were tennis club members at 'The Ritz Carlton', nowadays Orchid Fairmont at Mauna Lani at Mauna Lani Beach Resort. It was a wonderful place to play tennis and enjoy the nice crescent white sand beach afterwards! So that's what we did on this Sunday morning. Keoki settled in a beach chair and I went for swimming laps in the small lagoon. No big waves coming in there, just the tide moving in and out! Believe me I would never have never gone in otherwise. Even young children were still playing in the waters...

The Mauna Lani Ritz Carlton had beach attendants but no lifeguards. There were warning signs everywhere that the beach has 'No lifeguard on duty'. One can't blame them. When you see that lagoon beach, you'd never think it could do harm to anybody. It seems the most extremely safe Hawaiian beach. Again, the crescent lagoon beach has shallow waters which gradually gets deeper. The lagoon is protected by big lava rocks on both sides and in the middle before it opens to the ocean.

Remember my words 'just the tide moving in and out'. Well, here is what happened. The waves outside the protected lagoon grew bigger and bigger by the minute, which must have generated a terrible riptide. When I was on my 7th or 8th lap across the lagoon side to side, the riptide picked me up like a piece of nothing and pulled me at extreme speed in the direction of the open ocean.

I had no chance against that force and the lesson lifeguards always taught me not to resist the tide but allow yourself being pulled out till the riptide loses power, would not have worked this time. The huge waves would have crushed me in no time. What saved me, you ask, as I am obviously still walking on this planet...there were big iron chains hanging between the lava rocks on the sides and the middle one, I have no clue whatsoever what they were for but they saved my life!

In the second before being pulled out into the open ocean, I grabbed the chain and was clinging on for pure life against the power of the tide. I had to hold on to the chain with all my force...my whole body stretched in one big horizontal pull. When the riptide weakened, I took all my courage and leftover strength (not much left then!) to swim out of the danger zone before the next wave set would start.

I was one shaking person, heart pumping, hands trembling, legs wobbling but...alive!!! Keoki had not noticed. He had read his magzine all the time I had literally struggled for my life. He had a hard time to understand my aggitation and the impact what had happened. One beach attendant friend had seen me and said 'This was close!" but i doubt that he really knew how close it had been.

So, show big respect to the ocean waves and its powers. Ocean conditions can change in seconds, when even lifeguards cannot help anymore. Don't try to prove to yourself or others, how strong and brave you are. Hawaiian winter waves with undercurrents, riptides and close-to-shore breaking waves are stronger than you. Better be safe than sorry. Aloha, Pua Kohala Coast Vacation Guide

5 Myths about Hawaii

Getting ready for your first Hawaii Vacation? Well, when you think of Hawaii, you probably remember some things other people told you about Hawaii and their Hawaii vacation. There are certain myths about places and people, which are mostly legendary stories but they are actually not true. Anyhow, Hawaii is a good one for myths. Here is what we, Keoki and Pua from Best Hawaii Vacations, came up with after having lived for many years in Hawaii:

Hawaii myth number 1:

Hawaii is white sand beaches and swaying palm trees

Remember 'Mutiny on the Bounty' with Marlon Brando and all the beautiful Hawaiian (or was it Tahitian girls), white sand beaches, fresh tropical fruits and hula all day long. To tell you the truth, that was my image of Hawaii. Can you imagine my shock when I landed at Kona International Airport in the middle of old lava fields? Later, when getting to know all the Hawaiian Islands better, I found out that the beaches and the palm trees are not everywhere (they are just a small part of the islands), that beaches are not always white (Big Island has probably a larger number of black sand beaches created from lava), that there is lots of upcountry ranchland on Maui or the Big Island, that there are rough areas where you have hardly any access to (see Napali Coast on Kauai). Well, be prepared, Hawaii is much more than white sand beaches and palm trees (actually a lot of those were planted with resort construction!).

Hawaii myth number 2:

Hawaii weather is always sunny and nice

OK we admit it. Hawaii is blessed with some of the nicest climates and weather around the world. But guess what, not each part of the Hawaiian Islands is pure sunshine all year round. A general rule of thumb is - east coasts are more wet and rainy and west coasts are more dry and sunny! And don't forget the elevation. It can be quite cold at upcountry areas. So bring your sweater and be prepared to close the roof of your convertible, which you rented under the misconception, that it will be warm and sunny everywhere. A sudden, unexpected downpour when touring Hawaii countryside is not that rare. Especially winter months can bring a rain storm in with flash floods, which can be pretty dangerous. Scary stuff !!!! Watch the weather news and switch your radio on when riding down the Hwy! By the way, in most cases, winter storms hit all the Hawaiian islands starting on Kauai and coming its way 'down' to the Big Island, which is sometimes lucky, as the storm might have lost its power by then.

Here we go with the most often asked question: "When is the best month to visit Hawaii for my best Hawaii vacation"? Believe me, it's not just the most asked but the hardest to answer. When potential guests at our Hawaii vacation rentals asked us, we mostly said something like: "It's nice all year around but we cannot make any prediction or guarantees for the best Hawaii weather at any time of the year." Read GoHawaii Travel Planner article on When to visit Hawaii

Hawaii myth number 3:

Flipflops are cheap and good for your feet

First thing I did when I arrived in Hawaii in summer 1991 was buying flipflops. Everybody was wearing flipflops, from Hawaiian dudes, to white tourists and residents. It seemed the best way to cope with the heat plus comfortable and casual. But that feeling did not last long. Soon I experienced leg pain and cramps in the foot which I first could not pinpoint where it came from. Did not take me long to find the cause. Getting some more expensive sandals, with arch support and straps to hold the sandel on the foot, immediately 'healed' my unexplained symptoms. Later on as a licensed massage therapist, I was able to 'heal' other Hawaii visitors from their new Hawaii pains. I call it the 'flipflop' syndrome. So rather spend some money on some more supporting sandals for walking at the resort. If the sand is not too hot, just walk bare foot on the beach in Hawaii.

Hawaii myth number 4:

Taking a lava rock from the islands brings bad luck

With so many years having run our Hawaii vacation rentals, it was not rare that vistors would come back from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with all kinds of lava rocks. They had never heard about the myth that taking alava rock from islands will haunt you and bring you bad luck because Pele, the Goddess of the Volcano got mad at you. It is a known fact that vacationers who took lava rocks home against better advice, were haunted by bad luck until they returned the rocks to Hawaii. That's why we would always share the myth or legend with our visitors, as we felt it's their own decision. Myth or superstition, who knows? What do you think?

Hawaii myth number 5:

What do you think is a Hawaii myth 5?????

1st Suggestion from Personal Development for Book Smart
Hawaii Myth 5 would be "There are only hot babes and hunks in Hawaii"

2nd Suggestion from Sheila from 'Go Visit Hawaii' Blog
Hawaii Myth 5 would be "Most people assume that all the beautiful beaches are completely safe. Some beaches have dangerous currents, but people just hop in the water without checking for any safety concerns. They ignore beach safety signs and then get in trouble. I like to encourage people to check the official beach safety website"

3rd Suggestion from Da Kine Hawaiian Aloha
Hawaii Myth 5 would be "You may or may not know this, but did you know that what we refer to as the 6 Hawaiian Islands comprise a total of 137 Hawaiian Islands"

4th Suggestion from Ideal Hawaii Vacation
Hawaii Myth 5 would be "Hawaii is Too Expensive for a Vacation."
"Over the years we have heard many people make the comment that Hawaii is too expensive. We have been going to Maui for the last 20+ years and so think we have the authority to dispel such a myth. Yes if you stay in an expensive resort you will probably pay $350 or more per night, so that is expensive. However if you stay in a vacation rental that you rent from an owner, you can find some very affordable Hawaii accommodations. If you choose to eat every meal in a restaurant, yes, Hawaii, just like my home town in Penticton British Columbia, is expensive. However if you rent from an owner and cook your own meals it is the same as anywhere else."

Find more about this myth in comments below. This is a great comment how you can save on you vacation in Hawaii and still have your best Hawaii vacation.

5th Suggestion from Hawaii VacationGifts
Hawaii Myths 5 would be "If you live in Hawaii you can wake up and pick papayas for breakfast and catch your own fish for dinner. (People actually told me this when I went to school in California in the early nineties!)"

5th Suggestion is from Blogatech (ever need any help for your blogger blog, go visit Stratman)Hawaii Myth 5 would be"I've always heard that in the islands marijuana plants grow to the size of palm trees and their seeds are the size of coconuts :)"
Well, what do people say when they get addressed with a question or statement, they don't want to deal with: "No comment!"

To all those who believed in the Hawaii myth of catching a fresh fish for dinner, don't rely on that. Even those charter boats which take you out for deep sea fishing in Hawaii, can come home without the big fish!
