The Mother Daughter Book Club

THE MOTHER DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB
By:  Heather Vogel Frederick
FIRST SENTENCE
“It is so dreadful to be poor!” sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress.” - From Little Women
SUMMARY
from goodreads
The book club is about to get a makeover…
Even if Megan would rather be at the mall, Cassidy is late for hockey practice, Emma’s already read every book in existence, and Jess is missing her mother too much to care, the new book club is scheduled to meet every month.
But what begins as a mom-imposed ritual of reading Little Women soon helps four unlikely friends navigate the drama of middle school.  From stolen journals, to secret crushes, to a fashion-fiasco first dance, the girls are up to their Wellie boots in drama.  They can’t help but wonder:  What would Jo March do?
REVIEW
The Mother Daughter Book Club is the first in a four-book series.  Each book in the series takes on a different classic in the setting of a mother and daughter book club.  The first book explores Little Women, one of my favorite girlie classics.
I cannot begin to tell you how creative this book is.  There are four sets of mothers and daughters in the book club.  Each daughter can easily be compared to the main characters in Little Women.  Jess is a shy animal lover, Emma loves food and books, Megan wishes to be a clothing designer, and Cassidy is a tomboy.  Oh, and get this, there are even questions at the end of the story for a REAL mother daughter book club to use.
This unlikely group of tweens is brought together by The Mother Daughter Book Club.  I loved to see how the girls became friends over time and how they united when they stood up to Becka, the mean girl.
There is a secondary plot going on with the mothers and how they relate to each other and their daughters.  Considering they are all in a book club together, you just know they have to be cool.
On my next trip to the library, I am going to track down books 2 and 3 in this series.  Book 4, Pies and Prejudice, comes out in September.  It’s on my wishlist!
