Matched

MATCHED

By:  Ally Condie

FIRST SENTENCE

“Now that I’ve found the way to fly, which direction should I go into the night?”

SUMMARY
from goodreads

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

REVIEW

Society reigns supreme in Matched.  They decide EVERYTHING for you – how much food you eat, your job, how much you exercise, what you wear, where you live, and even who you marry.  Did you catch that?  Society decides who you will MARRY!

Cassia is the kind of main character that I absolutely adore.  She starts off being a follower and she transforms into a rebellious girl who fights for her beliefs.  From weak to strong – from controlled to controlling – from a mouse to a lion.  Yeah, she is THAT kind of main character.  Girl Power!

Team Xander or Team Ky?  Xander was a sweet best-friend for Cassia.  He seemed more like a brother than a match to me.  Ky was the perfect influence on Cassia to bring out her true nature. My verdict?  Xander = mismatch and Ky = match

Ally Condie creates the perfect dystopian feeling in Matched.  Society itself is both a setting and a character.  It’s the world the characters live in and the powerful threat that controls it all.  I wonder what was the final straw that did away with free will?  Why does Society treat the citizens like they are puppets?  Why hasn't there been a major rebellion?

Matched was a great beginning to the trilogy and its cliff-hanger ending left me wanting more.
