GOODREADS SUMMARY

When the Mayflower set sail in 1620, it carried on board the men and women who would shape America: Miles Standish; John Alden; Constance Hopkins. But some among the Pilgrims were not pure of heart; they were not escaping religious persecution. Indeed, they were not even human. They were vampires. The vampires assimilated quickly into the New World. Rising to levels of enormous power, wealth, and influence, they were the celebrated blue bloods of American society.

The Blue Bloods vowed that their immortal status would remain a closely guarded secret. And they kept that secret for centuries. But now, in New York City, the secret is seeping out. Schuyler Van Alen is a sophomore at a prestigious private school. She prefers baggy, vintage clothes instead of the Prada and pearls worn by her classmates, and she lives with her reclusive grandmother in a dilapated mansion. Schuyler is a loner...and happy that way. Suddenly, when she turns fifteen, there is a visible mosaic of blue veins on her arm. She starts to crave raw food and she is having flashbacks to ancient times. Then a popular girl from her school is found dead... drained of all her blood. Schuyler doesn't know what to think, but she wants to find out the secrets the Blue Bloods are keeping. But is she herself in danger?

REVIEW

Blue Bloods offers a fresh take on vampire novels. These vamps arrived on the Mayflower, can be out in the daylight, and they are a part of the prestigious rich and famous crowd. Since they have been around for so long, their past lives are all interconnected and rich with history.

In present times, some of the Blue Bloods attend Duschesne, a fancy private high school in New York City. Schuyler, a loner who feels like an outcast, has just come into her powers. I liked that, despite being an introvert, Schuyler has her own style and she isn’t trying to get with the in-crowd. That brings me to Mimi. She is the “it girl” at Duschesne. Totally self-absorbed, Mimi is a character who annoys me in all the right ways. Finally, there is Bliss. She is the sweet Texan who is awkwardly out of place in her new home. I like the pairing of these three girls because they are so different from each other and they don’t come off as too perfect.

If you like love triangles, the one in Blue Bloods will come as a complete surprise. I was shaking my head and thinking there was no way this was possible, but it was. You’ll know what I mean when you read it.

Some random killings of Blue Bloods on campus have everyone on edge. Now, you are probably wondering how a vampire can “die,” and Melissa de la Cruz has come up with a unique way to explain that. I really like the originality of her writing and especially how the history plays into what is going on today.

This first book in the series is a great set up for the next books. There are questions left unanswered and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

COVER COMMENTS

Make no question – those bite marks are from a Blue Blood. I like that the New York City skyline is included since it is an important part of the story.
