Review
The Cinderella you know is a do-gooder who mostly sits on the sidelines and lets fate carve her path. Wait until you meet THIS Cinderella. Feisty and powerful, she isn’t shy about using mad ninja skills and magic to decide her future. I loved that she took charge and made things happen.
Maureen McGowan gave this version of Cinderella has just enough of the original story to make it feel familiar. The stepmother is evil alright, but she is also a wizard with ninja skills too. The stepsisters are as dim-witted as you would expect. Don’t forget the prince. He shows up as a messenger, but underneath his disguise, he is charming and handsome. There’s even a cat named Max with a mysterious past who likes to give Cinderella advice.
Twisted Tales are terrific! The reader becomes the author and it becomes your story. There are several times during the story where you get to choose the outcome based on which chapter you read next. Pretty fun! You know I am sneaky, so I ended up reading ALL of the different outcomes because I was curious. Either way, it’s a cute and different idea.
This light and quick story is perfect for middle grade and younger young adult readers.

The castle background, the candles, and Cinderella’s dress make for a fairy tale feel. But wait a second, Cinderella is carrying a huge shiny sword. Oh YES she did! You can tell this is going to be a different kind of fairy tale.
