GOODREADS SUMMARY

What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths - until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

REVIEW

In the Republic, everything comes down to your trial. June earns a perfect score landing her in a position to fight for the prestigious military. Day fails his trial and is banished to the slums where a deadly plague rages. What brings these two together, the alliance they form, and the secrets they uncover drives this story.

Strong family bonds rule in Legend. June is extremely close to her brother, Metias. When he is killed, June will stop at nothing to avenge his death. Day’s family thinks he has died in the slums, but yet he continues to loyally fight for them. And it doesn’t stop there. Day also befriends a young slum girl who he protects and treats like family.  I think these family bonds are the framework for the teens June and Day have become.  I just LOVED this!  LOVED!

The evolving relationship between June and Day plays an important role. June is out for blood when Day is seen as the likely culprit in Metias’ murder. It takes unexpected truths and mental stamina for each of them to begin trusting the other. There's a push and pull and unbelievable tension as these two forge bonds.  Their eventual alliance, in the face of cruel leaders, is what made me fall in love with Marie Lu’s writing.

This fast moving plot is LOOOOONG on action too. There are dangerous weapons, daring escapes, and undercover missions. I felt like I was watching an action movie complete with slow motion and special effects. Really amazing scenes!  They pull you in, flip you around, bash you up and down, and then spit you back out!

Legend is a fantastic dystopian read.  Layers of deception in a world gone awry come together with unstoppable characters for the perfect mix.  Read this one!
