GOODREADS SUMMARY
For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose—the task she was put on earth to accomplish—is not as straightforward as she thought. Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she was supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.
REVIEW
Clara’s decision in Unearthly, to go with her heart rather than her purpose, has ramifications beyond what she initially expected. She struggles with the consequences of her action. Did she make a mistake? Can it be undone? And then Clara begins to see frightening visions involving someone close to her. It’s sad. It’s scary. It’s what I love to read!
I am going to address the love triangle.
Y’all know that I do not care for them. I don’t like the whole setup of a girl going back and forth trying to choose between two very different guys. Hallowed falls in this category as Clara finds herself with one guy while she daydreams about the other. I do, however, adore the actual characters and the way Cynthia Hand develops them. Take them out of this triangle, and they ROCK! There is no fake teen-speak, they react in realistic ways, they come off as typical teens in a very non-typical situation. Oh, and there are secondary characters who got under my skin just as they were supposed to.
Let’s move on to the guys.
Tucker and Christian are still in Clara’s life and they are each important to her for different reasons. Tucker is sweet and humble and the cowboy-next-door and all that awesome stuff. He keeps Clara grounded and he is made of pure goodness. Christian is intense and brooding and convinced that he and Clara are meant to be together. Now that probably makes Christian sound obsessive, but he does offer some things that Tucker cannot. He is of angelblood after all. It liked that neither of the guys were bad for Clara and they each gave her something that she needed.
The plot is a slow mover filled with sadness, confusion, and conflict. Clara’s family becomes a bigger part of the story and I was surprised by what was revealed. There is family drama dripping from these pages. Hallowed delivers deep character development and a plot that slowly builds to an ending that made me want more.
