GOODREADS SUMMARY

Where Mythology and Dystopia meet...

Piper’s world is dying. Global warming kills every living thing on Earth, and each day brings hotter temperatures and heat bubbles which threaten to destroy humanity. Amid this Global Heating Crisis, Piper lives with her mother who suffocates her more than the chaotic climate. When her mother is called away to meet the father Piper has been running from her entire life, Piper seizes an opportunity for freedom.

But when Piper discovers a world of mythology she never knew existed, she realizes her world is not the only one in crisis. While Gods battle for control of the Underworld, Piper's life spirals into turmoil, and she struggles to find answers to secrets kept from her since birth. And though she’s drawn to her classmate Shayne, he may be more than he claims. Piper has to choose whom she can trust and how she can save the people she loves even if it means the end of everything she’s ever known.

REVIEW

The world is on the verge of melting away. To survive, people live in cities covered in protective heat domes. It is that bad. Vivid descriptions of an overheated world bring the oppressive heat to life. The 100 degrees of Texas sun outside my window is nothing compared to this.

With the dome’s cooling effect, Piper has found a way to cultivate an elaborate garden. While she uses nature as an escape from her overbearing mother, Piper does not realize just why she is such a talented gardener. The seed of a mystery is planted.

The mystery becomes more intense when Piper meets Shayne and Reese, two new boys at school. These boys introduce Piper to a mythological world that exists in the present day. Piper is amazed by this revelation. I mean, come on, there are Gods among us! She also struggles with herself, and other forces, as she tries to choose between Shayne and Reese.

One of my favorite things is how the climate changes throughout the story. In the beginning, there is searing heat. Later, the seasons go from extreme heat to unbelievable cold over and over again. I felt as though the seasons were reflecting the turmoil Piper was experiencing.

Surprisingly, there is a character named Melina. I have never met anyone with my name before, so it was pretty shocking to see it there in print. You’ll have to read Soltice yourself to see if this Melina is naughty or nice.

Solstice is a dystopian myth that ties up nicely as a single book, although I wish there were an entire series to enjoy.

COVER COMMENTS

This cover is so burning HOT it nearly glows! That bright sun and the cracked earth really show off the heat.
