GOODREADS SUMMARY

Fifteen-year-old Felton Reinstein has always been on the smallish side, but in his sophomore year he starts growing...and growing.

During gym one day he smokes the football jocks in a 600-yard race. Felton has never been interested in sports, but there's no doubt-he is "stupid fast." As he juggles his newfound athletic prowess, his mom's sudden depression, an annoying little brother, and his first love, he discovers a shocking secret about his past which explains why he's turning out the way he is.

REVIEW

Felton doesn’t have much going for him. He’s always been rather small and he doesn’t fit in. Then something happens. Felton grows seemingly overnight and he is picked up by the football team.

Suddenly he is in the in-crowd and he attracts the attention of a beautiful girl. I think I even hear a choir singing in the distance.

Sounds perfect, right? WRONG!

Felton comes from a very, I repeat VERY, dysfunctional family. This is the heavy part of the story. His dad killed himself, his mom is in a deep depression, his little brother thinks he’s a pirate, and poor Felton finds himself in the middle of it all.  Eventually, there is an explanation for why his mother has sunk so low and it is heart-breaking.

I felt so bad for Felton. To cope, he made his life very simple – sleep, eat, football, sleep, eat, football… I wish Felton would have reached out to someone for help. Maybe he didn’t feel like he had anywhere to turn.

Geoff Herbach does a nice job of getting into Felton’s mind and presenting his thoughts in a realistic tone. I was starting to feel depressed just reading all that Felton was dealing with.

RATING

3 So-So

COVER COMMENTS

I like that Felton is in his uniform. He is all alone in his thoughts. The cover fits the story well.
